Fully Autonomous Cars Still a Dream

When will we have autonomous cars? Experts say not before 2020. Indeed, cars have come a long way since Henry Ford’s horseless carriage. In early days just steering or braking required strength, one reason men thought women would never be able to drive. Then cam power steering, power brakes, and eventually automatic steering. Now anyone could drive. In the sixties everyone thought the next thing would be cars that flew, like personal airplanes. That was never practical. Car makers couldn’t make cars fly. What they could do was make cars easier to drive.

We are still a few years away from totally self driving cars. We do, however, have cars that do many things for us. There are cars that will brake if there is something in the road, autonomous cars 2020 that can parallel park, and stay in their lane. The Honda Civic will drive for 25 miles without the driver touching the wheel or brakes, but only if there is another vehicle in front. Nissan plans on having self driving cars available by 2020.

Still, there are many bugs to work out. In California, where the laws allow for autonomous cars, Google self-driving cars have been driven on the highways by Google employees. They have logged close to 500,000 miles without any problems. The possibility of Google self-driving cars being available for the general public is still years away. Autonomous cars would make roads safer. One fourth of all auto accidents are caused by distracted diving. Computers can in many ways do a better job driving than people. Self driving cars would save money, if drivers don’t have to stop to sleep, deliveries could be made sooner.

While technology moves forward, there is still the matter of liability laws. Who’s at fault if an autonomous cars 2020 collides with a human controlled car? Cyber security is another real problem. What if someone hacks into a vehicle and causes it to commit a crime. Who is responsible? How can we keep our computer driver cars safe from hackers? There is also the problem of infrastructure. Roads, and highways, must be properly marked for autonomous vehicles to know where to go. Someday cars will drive themselves, but for now people are in control.
